Selected figure

Monthly figures count anyone who looked for work but had none in the 7 days before the survey (current weekly status). Yearly figures look at what people usually did over the year (usual status). The two measure different things and are never joined.

Selected period: Nov 2025Monthly (weekly status) · %. The monthly survey began in April 2025. The yearly line breaks after 2023-24: from 2025 the survey covers calendar years with a new design, and MoSPI says the figures may not be strictly comparable.

In plain words
What it means
The unemployment rate counts people aged 15 and above who had no work but were looking for it or available for it, as a share of everyone working or looking for work. People who are not looking, such as most students and homemakers, are not in it.
Monthly figures use current weekly status: what a person did in the 7 days before the survey. Yearly figures use usual status (ps+ss): what a person mostly did over the past year, plus any work for at least 30 days.
MoSPI redesigned the survey in January 2025. Monthly figures start in April 2025, and yearly figures moved from July–June years to calendar years. MoSPI says the 2025 figure may not be strictly comparable with earlier years, so the chart shows a break and no change is measured across it.
The July–June years from 2017-18 to 2023-24 all come from one table in the 2023-24 annual report, as that report prints them.
What this number is not
- Not the number of people without a job: it is a share of the labour force, people working or looking for work.
- Not the same as the yearly rate: the monthly and yearly figures measure different things.
