In plain words
What it means
Crimes against women include rape, cruelty by husband or relatives, kidnapping of women, dowry deaths, assault on modesty and cases under laws such as the Dowry Prohibition Act.
The rate is per lakh women, as NCRB prints it from 2012. Before 2012 NCRB printed it per lakh of all people, which is a different measure, so we do not show it.
What is a cognisable crime?
Read this before comparing
- These are crimes police registered, not all crimes that happened. Many crimes are never reported or registered, and a rise can mean more people came forward or registration became easier.
- NCRB counts one offence per case: when a case has several offences, only the most serious is counted.
- Rates use NCRB’s own population projections, which changed over the years; we show each rate exactly as printed.
- 2024 mixes the old and new criminal codes (BNS from 1 July 2024), so the change from 2023 to 2024 is not like for like.
