In plain words
What it means
Cyber crimes are cases under the IT Act and penal code or other laws where a computer or phone was the means or the target, such as online fraud.
Up to 2013 NCRB counted IT Act and IPC cases only; from 2014 it also counts other laws, so the two periods are drawn separately.
What is a cognisable crime?
Read this before comparing
- These are crimes police registered, not all crimes that happened. Many crimes are never reported or registered, and a rise can mean more people came forward or registration became easier.
- NCRB counts one offence per case: when a case has several offences, only the most serious is counted.
- Rates use NCRB’s own population projections, which changed over the years; we show each rate exactly as printed.
- 2024 mixes the old and new criminal codes (BNS from 1 July 2024), so the change from 2023 to 2024 is not like for like.
