How much foreign currency and gold does the RBI hold?

Reserves are counted in US dollars, so they rise and fall with exchange rates and the gold price, not only with what the RBI buys or sells. A fall does not by itself mean money left India.

In plain words
What it means
Foreign exchange reserves are the foreign currency assets, gold, Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) and reserve position at the International Monetary Fund that the RBI holds.
The RBI can use them to pay for imports in a crisis and to steady the rupee. The total is reported in US dollars, valued close to market prices.
The yearly series starts in 2002-03. RBI includes the reserve tranche position at the IMF from that year, and has valued gold close to its market price since October 1990.
What this number is not
- Not government money in the budget: the RBI holds and manages the reserves.
- Not all of India’s foreign assets: banks, companies and people hold more abroad.

Where this comes from
Published
End-of-month totals come from Table 210 and end-of-March totals from Table 144 of RBI’s Handbook of Statistics on the Indian Economy 2025-26. Months after the Handbook come from RBI’s monthly International Reserves and Foreign Currency Liquidity release, which prints the same total a month after each month ends.
