What is net national income per person each financial year, as MoSPI defines it?

Latest figure

₹2,08,090

Average income per person in FY 2025–26, at current prices (provisional estimate, 2022–23 base). Up from ₹1,93,657 the year before.

Also on the 2011–12 base

₹2,19,575 (first advance estimate, 7 Jan 2026)

Why are there two lines?

In February 2026 MoSPI started measuring the economy with a newer method, using 2022–23 as its base year. Some years are published both ways. The two figures come from different methods, not a correction, so they are never compared or joined.

The population used is not printed in this release.

From MoSPI’s “Press Note on Provisional Estimates of Annual GDP for 2025-26 and Quarterly Estimates of GDP for Q4 2025-26”, published 5 Jun 2026.

Annual, financial year (April–March) · Current prices. One line per base year. The newer 2022–23 base starts at FY 2022–23 and is drawn as its own line; the two are never joined. MoSPI plans to republish older years on the new base by December 2026.

What it means

Per-capita income here is MoSPI’s net national income per person: the income earned by everyone living in India in a year, after allowing for wear and tear on buildings and machines, divided by the population.

Current prices are the rupees of that year. Constant prices restate every year in the prices of the base year, so the change shows real growth rather than inflation. Constant-price figures on the 2011–12 and 2022–23 bases are in different rupees and cannot be compared.

The population used is MoSPI’s own estimate for the middle of the financial year, as printed in each release.

What this number is not

  • Not what a typical person earns: it is an average, and most people earn less than this figure.
  • Not household income: it also counts income earned by companies and the government.
  • Not adjusted for inequality: the same average can hide very different spreads of income.
  • Not our own calculation: it is MoSPI’s figure, divided by MoSPI’s own population estimate.

Where this comes from

Published

MoSPI publishes these figures in press notes and its yearly National Accounts Statistics. It estimates each year several times as more data arrives; every release below is kept exactly as printed, so a later estimate appears as a new release rather than replacing the earlier one, and a change of base year starts a new line.
