भंडार अमेरिकी डॉलर में गिना जाता है, इसलिए यह विनिमय दर और सोने की कीमत के साथ भी घटता-बढ़ता है, सिर्फ़ RBI की ख़रीद-बिक्री से नहीं। गिरावट का मतलब अपने आप यह नहीं कि पैसा भारत से बाहर गया।

संकट में आयात का भुगतान करने और रुपये को स्थिर रखने में RBI इनका इस्तेमाल कर सकता है। कुल भंडार अमेरिकी डॉलर में, बाज़ार कीमत के क़रीब आंककर बताया जाता है।
सालाना आंकड़े 2002-03 से शुरू होते हैं। उस साल से RBI IMF में आरक्षित किस्त की स्थिति शामिल करता है, और अक्टूबर 1990 से सोने को बाज़ार कीमत के क़रीब आंकता है।

महीने के आख़िर का कुल भंडार RBI की Handbook of Statistics on the Indian Economy 2025-26 की तालिका 210 से और मार्च के आख़िर का तालिका 144 से है। हैंडबुक के बाद के महीने RBI की मासिक International Reserves and Foreign Currency Liquidity रिलीज़ से हैं, जो हर महीना ख़त्म होने के एक महीने बाद यही कुल भंडार छापती है।
