भंडार अमेरिकी डॉलर में गिना जाता है, इसलिए यह विनिमय दर और सोने की कीमत के साथ भी घटता-बढ़ता है, सिर्फ़ RBI की ख़रीद-बिक्री से नहीं। गिरावट का मतलब अपने आप यह नहीं कि पैसा भारत से बाहर गया।

विदेशी मुद्रा भंडार में RBI के पास रखी विदेशी मुद्रा संपत्तियां, सोना, विशेष आहरण अधिकार (SDR) और अंतरराष्ट्रीय मुद्रा कोष (IMF) में आरक्षित स्थिति शामिल हैं।
संकट में आयात का भुगतान करने और रुपये को स्थिर रखने में RBI इनका इस्तेमाल कर सकता है। कुल भंडार अमेरिकी डॉलर में, बाज़ार कीमत के क़रीब आंककर बताया जाता है।
सालाना आंकड़े 2002-03 से शुरू होते हैं। उस साल से RBI IMF में आरक्षित किस्त की स्थिति शामिल करता है, और अक्टूबर 1990 से सोने को बाज़ार कीमत के क़रीब आंकता है।
